He was preceded in death by his parents, Manley and Rhodie Bell Waid Uptain; his wife of 38 years, Maggie Todd Uptain; and brothers, Harlon, Louie, Loyal, J.O., Kenneth and Dwight.
He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Smith (Wayne); grandchildren, Janette Speck (John), Thomas McGowan (Linda), Christy Bowers and Donnie Knopps; great-grandchildren, CJ Huffaker (Billy), Kalyn Speck, Megan McGowan, Christina Rodrequez (Rico) and Stephanie Duchene (Ernie); brothers, Eugene Uptain and Billy Uptain (Vickie); sisters, Betty Jo and Sheila; and a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Affectionately known to so many as Pop, Papaw, Slim, Bro. and Uncle Leo, and loved by all, he will be dearly missed. Leo was retired from Chetopa Coal Mines and stayed in touch with many of his friends from the mines. He enjoyed life and enjoyed sharing jokes and stories with all.
Visitation will be today, Jan. 24, 2014, from 11 a.m. until noon at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home.
Services will be today, Jan. 24, 2014, at noon in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel with burial in Union Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Ted Johnson will officiate.
