A large majority of roads, businesses and schools have been closed due to the snow and icy conditions that hit parts of the state early Tuesday. However, a glimmer of hope is expected for Thursday as temperatures are predicted to be above freezing.

Walker County and Jasper City students will be returning to classrooms today. The county school system will be delayed until 11:30 a.m., with buses set to run around 10:30 a.m. Walker County Schools Superintendent Jason Adkins said he wanted to be certain that all roads in his school district were safe to travel on.

“We’re just going to go in about 11:30, give the bridges time to de-ice. They’ll [buses] run about 10:30, usually an hour to an hour-and-a-half before. If they get there a little late, that will be fine,” Adkins said Wednesday afternoon. “It’s going to be 11 degrees, so we’re just going to try and let this get 100 percent over with and then go on in about the middle of the day.”

Jasper City schools will open at regular hours today with buses running at their normal time as well. City schools Superintendent Robert Sparkman said roads should be safe enough to travel on to the individual schools in his district.

“I’ve been out checking roads, checking buildings, and everything’s ready to go. So, we’re going to reopen at the normal time tomorrow [Thursday],” Sparkman said.

According to both superintendents, students will not be required to make up the past few days.

“The state superintendent sent out a memo and, as a result of the governor declaring an emergency throughout the whole state, we won’t have to make them up,” Adkins said.

No injuries or accidents were reported with either school system. Thanks to careful planning and monitoring of the situation, both school systems were prepared and followed through with their normal protocol on canceling schools across the county.

Officials at Bevill State Community College say classes will be delayed Thursday until 11 a.m. at the Jasper and Sumiton campuses.

All other campuses will resume their normal schedules.
