High School Basketball: Walker wins behind huge second quarter

Walker hit five 3-pointers during a hectic second quarter and Winfield had no response as the Vikings finished off a season sweep of the Pirates, earning a 71-59 win at Songer Gym on Friday night.

Walker, playing its Senior Night, held a two-point lead after the first quarter, but put 31 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to build a 24-point halftime lead and finish off the Pirates.

Winfield (16-4) didn’t get within single digits the rest of the way.

Walker’s long-range shots were falling in the first half. The Vikings hit three 3-pointers in the opening quarter, with Brandon Thursby connecting on two to give Walker a 17-15 lead.

The second quarter was all Walker as Riley Graham, Johnathan McCants, Ja’Ray McElrath and Dawson Salors each made 3-pointers. McCants had seven points in the quarter, Graham added six and Isaiah Cox added five. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Walker had a commanding 48-24 lead.

Walker coasted through the final two quarters, making just two 3-pointers to give the Vikings 10 for the game. The Vikings were up 58-40 after three quarters.

McCants led Walker (15-9) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Thursby had 13 points, Cox and Kenyatta Woods. added eight points, McElrath had seven while Graham had six points and Bridges had six points and eight rebounds. Seniors on the squad are McCants, Thursby, McElrath, Graham, Bridges and Harrison Hunter.

Walker closes out the regular season at Songer Gym today vs. Pleasant Grove. There will be three games: 9th-grade boys, JV boys and varsity boys starting at 3 p.m.

GIRLS

Winfield 67, Walker 57

Winfield made 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to finally put away the Vikings Friday night at Songer Gym.

The game was close throughout the first three quarters.

Winfield led 11-9 after the first quarter. Walker bounced back to take a 29-27 halftime lead. The game was notched at 39-39 going into the final quarter.

Sidney Cooper poured in 22 points, including 11 in the final quarter. She connected on five 3-pointers in the game. Madisyn Hood scored all 10 of her points in the first half for the Vikings (12-10). Seniors for Walker are Cooper and Shannie Johnson.

Winfield knocked down 14-of-19 free throws in the final quarter with Beth Earnest making 6-of-7. She finished with 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Mary Gilmore had 16 for the Pirates (19-2) while Katilyn Kosteler added 15.
