Three local basketball teams are about to find out as boys area tournaments begin across the state.
Parrish, Dora and Walker are each hosting area tournaments games today. The area tournament championship games will be held on Monday night.
The three area tournament hosts finished a perfect area record. Parrish was 8-0 while both Walker and Dora were 6-0.
Both Parrish and Dora are looking for repeat performances from last season. The Tornadoes and Bulldogs each won area tournament titles at home last year and advanced to regional championship games as the season progressed.
No. 3 Parrish (23-2) runs into a familiar opponent today in the 1A, Area 13 Tournament at Parrish — Marion County. The Tornadoes played the Red Raiders five times last season, winning the first four before losing their matchup at the Northwest Regional Tournament.
The teams have played twice this season with Parrish winning both times, including a four-point win at Marion County last week.
In today’s first game at Parrish, Lynn battles Sumiton Christian with the loser going home.
The top two finishers from each area tournament advance to the sub-region round of the playoffs. Each area tournament champion will host a sub-region game while the loser travels.
At Dora, three area teams will play in the Class 4A, Area 8 Tournament.
Dora (21-7) won last year’s tournament, beating Carbon Hill in the championship game. Both teams won sub-region games and advanced to the regional tournament in Montgomery.
This season, both battles of the Bulldogs have gone to Dora.
In today’s tournament opener, Carbon Hill (16-12) faces Corner in an elimination game set for 6 p.m.
The teams split their first two meetings with Corner beating Carbon Hill 47-46 at Corner in early December and Carbon Hill winning 46-39 at home in mid-January.
Dora plays today’s nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
While Parrish and Dora are enjoying another productive season, Walker has turned its fortune around under first-year head coach Rufus McDuffie.
The Vikings are 15-10 this season after going just 6-17 last year.
Under McDuffie, Walker’s strength has been its pressure defense and its 3-point shooting — both have been particularly effective against area foes.
Today’s 5A, Area 14 Tournament opens with Mortimer Jordan taking on Hayden at 6 p.m. at Songer Gymnasium.
The night closes with Walker playing Curry (2-22) at 7:30 p.m.
The Vikings have beaten the Yellow Jackets by an average of 59 points a game in two meetings this year.
