A number of school systems and local organizations will be closed today due to inclement winter weather that will be affecting a large majority of the state.

Jasper City, Walker County and Sumiton Christian school systems will be closed today.

School officials said they will continue to monitor weather conditions and notify parents, faculty and staff when decisions have been reached.

Walker County Schools Superintendent Jason Adkins posted online Monday, “If no emergency status is declared by the Governor, the make-up day will be this coming Monday, Feb. 17. This date was originally set aside for [the] President's Day holiday. We will assess the situation periodically and see what is in store for Wednesday, rendering a final decision about 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.”

All Winston and Jefferson county schools will be closed today, too.

All locations of Bevill State Community College will be closed today, and the Read Alabama event scheduled at 4 p.m. today also is canceled.

The East Walker Chamber of Commerce will delay its meeting until Feb. 18 at noon, and all day programs/hourly services at the Arc of Walker County have also been canceled.
