HANCEVILLE — The ninth-ranked Belgreen Bulldogs (28-3) used a pressure defense and a precision 3-point shooting game to eliminate the Sumiton Christian Eagles from the Northwest Regional Tournament, 66-48, on Tuesday at Hanceville.

Demonte Hobbs closed out his senior season — scoring 27 points to lead the Eagles. Vann Lovelady contributed with 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.

“We competed throughout the game, but we were not able to make enough plays to get momentum moving in our favor,” Sumiton Christian coach Bill Griffin said. “I’m proud that our guys fought to the buzzer — we’ve had a great season and we’ll work hard to try to get back here next year.”

The two teams battled evenly throughout the first period, resulting in a 14-14 tie.

The Bulldogs broke the stalemate with 6-2 run in the second period to take a four-point advantage, 34-30 into halftime.

Belgreen added to its lead in the third period. The Bulldogs took command of the game with an 11-0 run that pushed their lead to 15 points midway through the quarter.

Sumiton Christian (21-9) trailed 51-42 going into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs secured victory after a 15-6 scoring run in the fourth period for the 66-48 win.

Belgreen got 32 points from Chase Landers, who was 6-of-13 from 3-point territory. As a team, the Bulldogs were 9-of-26 from long range.
