This week is National FFA week across the United States. Caleb Downs, president of the Curry FFA, greeted board members and superintendent Jason Adkins with gift bags as a token of appreciation for all they do.
“I was asked to come out here and talk to y’all today about how important FFA week is to us, not just as members of Curry High School’s FFA, but as the national FFA. It is our national association,” Downs said. “One of the things I was going to mention is how much support the FFA shows for everybody. ... Our motto is ‘Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.’”
Downs went on to say even though FFA stands for Future Farmers of America, there is so much more that makes up the association. He mentioned “premier leadership, career development and personal growth” as the main goals of the FFA. He told the story of how he has gone from being a shy ninth grader to a confident leader in his senior class.
“It’s an amazing program, and it’s turned me into what I am today,” Downs said. “... It gets students involved. It gets everyone involved to enjoy and reap the benefits of being an FFA member.
“Looking back on who I was in ninth grade and seeing who I am today, makes me feel so good that we have these programs in schools.”
After Downs’ finished and returned to his seat, board chairman Brad Ingle thanked him for speaking on behalf of Curry’s FFA and called his presentation “impressive.”
“I believe whatever you choose to do you’ll be successful at it,” Ingle said when asking Downs what he plans to do after graduating high school.
In other business, the board:
•approved the minutes from the Jan. 16 meeting.
•approved the CNP Wellness Policy on nutrition and physical activity.
•accepted the January 2014 bank reconciliation and financial statement.
•approved both regular and professional personnel lists.
•approved a number of school trips among Lupton Jr. High, Parrish Elementary, Curry Middle, Curry High, Valley Jr. High, Carbon Hill High and Dora High schools. Two of those schools will receive a $500 reimbursement each for attending the State Beta Club Convention.
•approved volunteer coaches.
•approved the HeadStart ERSEA Packet, regarding the procedures to accept children into the program, and the HeadStart budget and program information (information only).
•approved to pay fire dues to the Boldo Volunteer Fire Department.
•Ingle commended Adkins, director of transportation Mike Scott and the rest of the central office staff for keeping an eye on the weather and making good judgments on calling or delaying school hours over the past couple of weeks. He then asked Adkins if students will have to make up those days.
“The governor did another state of emergency for that, so they are not necessarily an item that has to be made up. However, you have a responsibility there on some instructional time with some very important classes, and we’re going to take some days in,” Adkins said. “I think we have two professional development days ... and we’re going to make those instructional days.”
The board meeting ended and members went into executive session. No action was made following the session.
The next regular Walker County Board of Education meeting will be Thursday, March 13.
