Approximately 30 special needs athletes and their families attended “Dream Prom” at Memorial Park Natatorium.
Fifteen-year-old Anna Kate Gilbert organized the event.
“There were only two of our girls who had ever been to a prom. I really wanted to do something for them,” said Gilbert, who has been a Dream Team buddy for three years.
Attendees were treated to a typical prom experience — dinner, dancing and professional photos.
Rotary Club of Jasper, La Ti Da Salon, the cosmetology department at the Walker County Center of Technology and the Jasper Police Department Explorers program helped sponsor the event.
The “Dream Prom” was open to anyone in the community 13 and older, and there was no cost to participate.
The city of Jasper established Dream Team in 2009 to promote inclusiveness in local sports.
The program began with baseball and later branched out to soccer and football.
The George Lindsey Dream Field, an accessible baseball diamond named for a Jasper native who starred on “The Andy Griffith Show,” opened in April 2013.
