Sunday morning at approximately 5:10 a.m., two men pulled up to the front of the Sumiton pharmacy and shattered the glass with a large rock.
The burglary was captured on surveillance tape. It shows two men in masks enter the building and go straight to the pharmacy.
Ginger Abbott, one of the businesses’ pharmacy managers, arrived at the scene shortly after Sumiton police. She said once police cleared the building, it quickly became clear that the burglars had a specific target in mind. No cash was taken from the registers, and only narcotics were taken from the pharmacy.
The suspects appeared to be driving a small white car. They were in and out of the business within three minutes.
Abbott said the rock thrown through the front door was heavy enough that it damaged the store’s tile floor, and the door to the area where medications are kept was also broken.
Abbott said in the week prior to the robbery, employees had reported at least three incidents of suspicious vehicles in the parking lot.
“We just feel violated,” Abbott said. “This is a family-owned business.”
Abbott also said she was concerned about the increase in burglaries and robberies of pharmacies recently.
Despite the damage, Abbott said there had been positives, including a man who stopped by Sunday and offered to board up the damaged front door, saying he knew how it felt to be a victim of thieves.
“We just wish he would come by so we can thank him in person,” Abbott said. “It reminds you there are good people still willing to help you.”
Sumiton police were unavailable for comment and no one has linked this burglary to the burglaries Son’s Pharmacy in Parrish and Strickland’s Pharmacy in Carbon Hill earlier in the weekend. Anyone with information on the burglary should contact Sumiton police at 205-648-3261.
