Northside Baptist Church in Jasper will give you that chance next weekend when it hosts a special Outdoorsmen Banquet sponsored by the church’s men’s ministry and the Challengers young men’s mission group.
The banquet is set for Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in downtown Jasper. It begins with a special exhibit of outdoor events. Dinner, which consists of venison steaks and burgers, cole slaw, baked beans, mashed potatoes, bread, banana pudding and a drink, begins at 5:30 p.m.
A program which includes guest speaker Sid Bream, a former Major League baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves, begins at 6:15 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Northside Baptist Church. They can also be purchased at Pat’s Archery and Outdoors, Fisher’s Store for Men in the Jasper Mall and Jasper Feed and Seed. For more information on the banquet, you can call (205) 384-3214.
John Jaye of Northside Baptist Church said the church hosted a similar event two years ago that drew more than 300 people.
“A lot of our young men hunt and fish, and they wanted to do something to maybe reach their friends,” Jaye said. “Everybody had a really good time with this two years ago, so we gathered our resources to be able to do this again.”
In addition to the meal consisting of venison, samples of other wild game delicacies will be available for anyone wanting to sample them. That includes duck, elk, rabbit, alligator, frog legs, fried turkey, fish, squirrel gumbo, venison sausage and salmon. Jaye said there’s a possibility that rattlesnake meat may be added to the list.
Bream, who retired from Major League baseball in 1995, is best known for the 1992 National League Championship Series that ended in dramatic fashion, as in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7, with Atlanta down 2–1 and the bases loaded, the Braves' Francisco Cabrera cracked a two-run single that scored David Justice and Bream. Bream just barely beat the tag at home, scoring the winning run and sending the Braves to the 1992 World Series.
Bream played 15 years in the majors, including playing in four consecutive National League playoffs.
He played in two World Series with Atlanta.
Following his retirement, Bream became an avid outdoorsman and loves to talk about what he calls “God’s awesome handprint across this world.” He lives in Zelienople, Pa., with his wife, Michelle, and four children.
A number of door prizes will be given out during the event. They are being sponsored by Carl Cannon Chevrolet, Chick-fil-A, Fisher’s Store for Men, Hibbett Sports, Hudson Pawn Shop, Masco Auto Parts, Simmons Sporting Goods, Sonny’s Fast Track, Jasper Auto Sales, Havoline Express Lube, Insane McCain Fireworks, Zaxby’s, Walker Farmers Co-op and Alan Hadaway.
Those helping to contribute to the event include After Hours Clinic, Pat’s Archery and Outdoors, Daniel Goins, Greg Tinker, Willie Guthrie, Russ Runyan, Mike Perry and the Boy Scouts of America.
Those participating in the exhibition to begin the event include the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Alabama Marine Police, Alabama Whitetails magazine, Ben Pavlovec Taxidermy, the Blackwater Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Boy Scouts of America, Carl Cannon Chevrolet, Fisher’s Store for Men, Jasper Feed and Seed, master dog trainer Mike Perry, S&W Powersports and Stripe Masters.
