CPD celebrates one year of ‘Good Morning’ program

“It means a lot to me because I know there is somebody looking out for me,” said Wise, who is 86 and lives alone.

Wise and Murphy are two of the participants in the Cordova Police Department’s “Good Morning” program, which is entering its second year.

Chief Nick Smith started the program for residents 60 and older or adults with disabilities who live alone.

Participants are contacted each day between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. by a member of CPD, usually Eustice.

If there is no answer on his first attempt, Eustice tries again between 10 and 15 minutes later.

If the second attempt fails, the person’s emergency contact is notified or an officer is dispatched to the residence.

Murphy said she tries to inform Eustice on mornings that she will be away from her phone, but she sometimes forgets, such as when she and Wise went to Jasper together to run an errand.

“We had both forgot to call. After we got in, I went to the refrigerator to get us something to eat and here came a policeman into my yard. I opened the storm door and said, ‘I’m sorry we didn’t call, but we’re both all right,’” Murphy said.

Eustice said the calls take 30 minutes or less of his time and are a welcome part of his day.

“I really enjoy talking to every one of them. They’re great,” Eustice said.

In addition to the “Good Morning” program, Wise and Murphy have also participated in other programs of CPD such as “Coffee with the Cops.”

“They’re like family. They don’t treat us like they’re above us. It means a lot,” Wise said.
