The “crop drop” is being sponsored by the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. Local partners include First Baptist Church of Jasper and First United Methodist Church of Jasper.
Food Bank represenative Amanda Storey said at a local event on Monday that the Food Bank works with the Society of St. Andrew, a national faith-based nonprofit that salvages fresh produce.
“When a farmer has a plethera of produce available, they are able to donate those items. It’s beneficial to them. It doesn’t go to waste, and we are able to get it out for free to the community,” Storey said.
In 2013, Society of St. Andrew rescued 32.4 million pounds of food with help from 38,000 volunteers.
Bagging will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the FBC parking lot. The first five-pound bags of apples will be distributed to area agencies at 10 a.m.
To register to receive the apples, email Deb White at email@example.com.
