Walker’s girls tennis team wins Benjamin Russell tourney

The Walker girls tennis team won the Benjamin Russell Tennis Invitational Saturday in Alexander City. Walker defeated Class 6A Auburn High School 5-4 in the championship match.

Leading into the final, the Vikings defeated Pell City (9-0), Chelsea (9-0) and Oneonta (9-0 in the two-day tournament..

Against Auburn, Walker won two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Kallie Beall and Lexi Dillard picked up a 10-6 victory, the No. 2 team of Jeana Burton and Sarah Warren lost 10-6 and the No. 3 team of Olivia and Abby Hayes won 10-4.

Walker and Auburn split their six singles matches. The Vikings lost at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.

Walker’s No. 1 Beall lost her match 10-8 while No. 2 Burton dropped her match 10-4.

The Lady Vikings’ No. 3 Dillard won 10-4, No. 4 Warren won 10-6, No. 5 Olivia Hayes won 10-3 and No. 6 Shanna Watts lost 10-7.

Walker’s girls (10-1) have lost just one match on the season.

Walker plays at Decatur on Tuesday and travels to Altamont on Thursday.
