Funeral services will be today, March 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Gil McKee and Dr. Rick Lance officiating. Burial will follow at New Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Nauvoo.
O’Mary lived the life of an Army wife for 27 years — a period spanning the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War — moving her household frequently and sometimes being separated from her husband for periods of a year or more. She worked to help support the family, holding such jobs as stock control manager of the gigantic Fort Benning Sales Center that marketed books, Army clothing, accoutrements of uniform and a large assortment of miscellaneous items.
She later worked in mail assortment at the giant U.S. Post Office facility in Alexandria, Va., and after moving with her husband to Tuscaloosa in 1974, served the business community by welcoming newcomers to the area and providing information of businesses and services available in the greater Tuscaloosa community.
O’Mary later served for several years as director of volunteers for the American Red Cross, conducting numerous blood drives in the greater Tuscaloosa area. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa, caring for infants in the church nursery for a period of 31 years, seldom missing a Sunday.
She watched the children grow through their teen years and become parents themselves. Two generations passed through her loving care before her deteriorating state of health required her to cease a church duty that she loved so deeply. Jane O’Mary will be missed so greatly by so many.
O’Mary is survived by her husband of 62 years, Col. Paul R. O’Mary, U.S. Army (Retired); three daughters, Mary Allean O’Mary Stewart of Tuscaloosa, Sharon Leigh O’Mary Casey (Brion) of Helena and Karen Marie O’Mary Spann (James) of Birmingham; a brother, Charles Murphree (Sue) of Decatur; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Roy Crowder, Sonny Falgout, Grady Friday, Rick Gibson, Mark Gurganus, George Hodgson, Milton Marcum and Jerry Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made in her honored memory to the Operating Budget of First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa or to one of the following endowed funds at the University of Alabama: The Colonel Paul R. and Jane M. O’Mary Distinguished Graduate Fund, the Will T. O’Mary Memorial Endowed Math Scholarship, the Ethel M. O’Mary Boshell Endowed Education Scholarship, the Henry Lloyd O’Mary Endowed Education Scholarship, or the Will T. O’Mary Jr. Endowed Music Scholarship Fund.
