A one-vehicle accident that knocked out electricity to several local businesses and closed part of U.S. Highway 78 for several hours on Tuesday was no April Fool’s Day joke.

Jasper Fire Chief David Clark said his department was paged out to an accident at the intersection of Highway 78 and 20th Avenue East around 8:30 a.m.

“One vehicle hit a power pole in the median. There was one injury. He was transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center,” Clark said.

The power pole was broken during the accident. A number of businesses in the area, including Walmart, Chick fil A, Home Depot and Murphy USA as well as the Department of Human Resources lost power.

Clark said first responders also had to rescue two individuals who were stranded on an elevator between floors at one of the businesses because of the accident.

The highway was shut down for several hours so that power crews could make the necessary repairs. Traffic was diverted to Viking Drive.

Power was restored to the area and the highway was reopened around 11:20 a.m.
