Prep Softball: Cordova earns 1-0 win over Cullman

CORDOVA — The Class 3A, No. 6 Cordova Blue Devils earned a dramatic, seventh-inning home victory on Thursday, beating the Class 5A, No. 9 Cullman Bearcats 1-0 at Cordova.

The pitcher’s duel between Cordova’s Faith Sims and Cullman’s Claire Jenkins went to the victorious Sims — who went the entire seven shutout innings, giving up six hits and recording eight strikeouts.

Offensively for Cordova, Grayson Kilpatrick was 2 for 3, with Hannah Ingram, Sims and Hannah McLemore each recording hits.

After six scoreless innings, McLemore came to bat at the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base and only one out. On the second pitch, McLemore sent a shot into shallow left field that allowed Lindsey Gilbert to score from third base and seal the 1-0 win.

The Lady Blue Devils will host county rival Dora on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Top-ranked Sumiton Christian had its way with Marion County, earning a 13-0, five-inning area road win over the Red Raiders on Thursday.

Kendall Beth Sides had a huge game for the Eagles, going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, a home run and seven RBIs, Jenna Ergle was 3 for 4 with a double, her 11th home run of the season and three RBIs, Jessie Boone was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Kirsten Click was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Katlyn Sides was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Savanah Langston was 2 for 2, Kendell Hamm was 2 for 3, Abbie Brewster had a hit and an RBI and Abbey Bice added a hit.

Kendall Beth Sides earned the victory, allowing three hits and striking out nine.

Sumiton Christian (22-6) plays in the Bob Jones Tournament starting today at 4:30 p.m. vs. Hillcrest with a game against Ballard, Kent., to follow.

Carbon Hill 7, Dora 2

Carbon Hill continued its hot streak, earning a 7-2 home, area win over Dora on Thursday.

Dora took an early 2-0 lead, but Carbon Hill struck for four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good.

Katie Moore paced Carbon Hill, going 3 for 4 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI, Tessa Ivey was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Jessica Hurst was 1 for 2 with a run, Abby Tittle was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Kenna Alexander was 1 for 4 and Anna Grace Martin added a run and an RBI.

Korey Tidwell, Savanna Lawson and Taylor Norris each scored runs for Carbon Hill (13-9, 3-1).

Ivey got the win, allowing five hits and striking out four in seven innings.

For Dora, Madisen Bencko was 2 for 4 with a run, Lindsey Johnson was 1 for 4 with a run and Jazz McRoy was 2 for 3.

Lexi McLeroy took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two in three innings.

Carbon Hill and Dora both play in the Meek Tournament starting Friday.
