Add another Walker County softball team to the rankings.

Oakman entered the poll this week in the No. 8 position in Class 2A. The Wildcats are back in the poll for the first time in more than six years.

The Wildcats’ young squad started the season slow, winning one of their first six games, but Oakman turned the corner starting with the Bill Collins Tournament in Carbon Hill late last month.

The Wildcats won the tournament, defeating Lynn, the No. 3 team in Class 1A, along the way.

Oakman, which defeated Parrish 8-4 on Wednesday, is 8-2 in its last 10 games. “Being ranked is huge for us,” Oakman coach Whitney Jordan said. “It was definitely unexpected, but it’s a big blessing. It’s huge for our girls and the program. It’s something that our girls are very proud of and something for them to continue to strive for.

“I keep preaching to them about consistency. We’ve been playing pretty good ball lately, but they’ve got to stay consistent with this level of play. I’m very proud of these girls, and what they’ve been able to accomplish so far.”

Oakman is one of five area high schools ranked in this week’s poll.

Both Curry (Class 5A) and Sumiton Christian (1A) hold down the No. 1 spots, Cordova (21-11-1), which defeated four teams ranked in Class 5A and 6A over the weekend, is No. 6 in Class 3A while Lynn (28-4) is No. 3 in Class 1A.

Three of the top four teams in Class 5A play in Area 12.

Along with Curry (28-4), defending state champion Hayden (25-2) is No. 2 and Mortimer Jordan (18-10) is No. 4. The Yellow Jackets play at Mortimer Jordan today.

Curry won the first matchup 12-4 at home.

Sumiton Christian (23-10) went 2-4 over the last week with three of the losses coming to larger schools in the Bob Jones Tournament.

Oakman's baseball team moved up one spot to No. 5 in Class 2A. The Wildcats are the only ranked baseball team in the area.
