OAKMAN — Playing its first game as a ranked team this season, the Oakman Wildcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held on from there, beating defending Class 1A state champion Parrish 8-4 on Wednesday at Oakman High School.

Oakman pitcher Kamree Lay dominated the Tornadoes through the first five innings, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out nine.

Parrish scored all four of its runs over the last two innings.

The Tornadoes made things interesting in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Lay re-entered the game and struck out two of the final three batters to get out of the jam. She finished the game with 11 strikeouts.

Oakman led 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 in the second innings thanks to a two-run triple from Bailee Trotter, who was a perfect 4 for 4 on the day with two runs and two RBIs. Trotter finished a home run short of the cycle. The Wildcats added five more runs in the third inning to take control.

Madeline Custred was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Mallory Nunnelley was 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, Carmen Hadder was 1 for 1 with two stolen bases and an RBI, Riley Brown was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Malori Crowell scored two runs and Jordan Harbison scored once.

Oakman (14-12 overall, 1-1 in 2A, Area 10 play) plays an area game at Cold Springs starting at 4:30 p.m. today.
