Prep Baseball: Cordova splits with Winfield

CORDOVA — Chad Russell drove in pinch runner Peyton Templeton with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth as the Cordova Blue Devils edged Winfield 5-4 in game two of their double header Thursday at Cordova High School.

Winfield blanked Cordova 4-0 in the opener.

Both teams are headed to the playoffs. Winfield is the Class 3A, Area 14 champion while Cordova is the runner up.

Cordova trailed the second game 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Blue Devils struck for two in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the win.

With the Blue Devils trailing 4-3, Jackson Kiser delivered a two-out triple to drive in Hunter Gilmore with the tying run. Russell followed with a single to score Templeton for the 5-4 lead.

Kiser sat down Winfield in order in the seventh to get the win.

Russell started the game and went five innings.

Kiser was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, Gilmore was 1 for 3 with two runs and Russell was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

In the first game, Gilmore got the loss despite a strong outing on the mound, allowing four runs — two earned — on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Winfield’s Matthew Gamble out-dueled Gilmore, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three in the shutout performance.

The Pirates scored two runs in the third inning and one run in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Cordova (16-11, 3-3) plays at Parrish at 11 a.m. Saturday and hosts Sumiton Christian in the regular-season finale on Tuesday.

Walker reaches .500 mark

Walker won two games at Hayden on Thursday to close out area play and reach the .500 mark on the season.

The Vikings (17-17, 4-2) won the opener 5-4 in nine innings and took the nightcap 7-2.

In the first game, Stone Stephenson singled in John Michael Reed with the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning.

Jackson Holladay got the win in relief of Bailey Tidwell. Holladay went the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.

Logan Nix was 2 for 5 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI, Reed was 1 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs, Stephenson was 1 for 4 with an RBI, Brooks Wade was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI, CJ Robinson was 2 for 4 with a run and Tidwell was 1 for 3.

Wade had a huge game in the nightcap, finishing 3 for 3 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs.

Chandler Crump got the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk. He struck out three in five innings. Nix got the save, striking out five in two innings.

Nix was 1 for 2 with a run and two stolen bases, Reed was 1 for 4 with two runs and a stolen base, Taylor Whitley was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI and both Stephenson and Holladay added hits.

Walker plays a double header at West Point starting at 4:30 p.m. today.

Eagles, Wildcats lose

Sumiton Christian and Oakman earned runner-up finishes in area play.

Both teams had chances to win area championships Thursday on the road.

Sumiton Christian fell to area champion Marion County 8-4 in Guin on Thursday.

Oakman, which won its area game against Lamar County on Tuesday, lost a pair of road games to the Bulldogs on Thursday, falling to 11-6 and 2-1.

Both teams will travel in the first round of the playoffs next Friday.
