The event, which raised almost $10,000 for the school during last year’s inaugural event, is one of two major fundraisers held at the school each year.
The day’s events will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment at the school, followed by the 5K at 6 and the fun run at 6:30.
The cost to participate in the 5K and fun run is $12 for students, $25 for adults 18 and older. Those participating will receive a T-shirt.
You can get more information on the event by going to simmonsatsunset.com, or by calling the school at (205) 387-2535.
“It’s so much fun,” said Cammie Channell, a teacher at the school who is coordinating the event along with T.R. Simmons teacher Ashley Harbin. “Last year, we had 380 runners sign up. We really didn’t know what we were getting into last year, but it turned out great.”
Channell said the support from the community helped make last year’s event a success.
“The community has been really great supporting this,” she said. “We’re very proud of the support we got last year and are getting this year. It really is a team effort to get this going.”
“We’ve had great community support,” said T.R. Simmons principal Suzanne Snow. “It’s been wonderful.”
Funds raised from the event this year will be used to build a new playground and fitness facility that includes a basketball court and is handicap-accessible.
Businesses and individuals helping to sponsor the event include Southern Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, the Sapp Law Firm, Alan Johnson, Manchester Auto Parts, Harbin’s Outdoors, Bivona Dental, Urgent Care Northwest, Bull Building Supply, Modern Woodmen of America, Nelson, Bryan and Jones law firm, Hager Oil, Lavish Boutique, the Beaird Law Firm, Buddy’s Furniture, Carl Cannon Chevrolet, Scott Crump Toyota, King Wiley and Williams law firm, Johnny Brusco’s and Tan Essentials.
