More than 110 special needs athletes from across north Alabama were in Jasper this week to compete in a Special Olympics of Alabama sectional swim meet at the Memorial Park Natatorium.

The swim meet serves as a qualifier for the state Special Olympics competition which will be held May 16-17 at Troy University.

Special needs athletes — 113 in all — from Etowah, Lee, Madison, Morgan, Shelby, Jefferson, Talladega and Tuscaloosa counties joined athletes from Jasper in the one-day meet. The athletes and their hosts were treated to a special welcome party Thursday night at the natatorium.

“It was awesome,” said Stacy Kirkpatrick Banks, the manager of the Memorial Park Natatorium who coordinated the swim meet. “We were thrilled with the success of the event.”

A number of volunteers helped make the event a success, Banks said, including members of the Carbon Hill High School Beta Club, Walker High School Anchor Club and EMT students from Bevill State Community College.
