Opal R. Vanderver, 98, of West Jefferson, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at her residence.

Visitation will be Monday, April 21, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, April 21, 2014, at 1 p.m. in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Joel Carden will officiate. Burial will follow at Freewill Cemetery in West Jefferson.

Vanderver was a graduate of Howard College. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at Bessie School, Brookside School and West Jefferson Elementary School. She was a member of West Jefferson Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren G. Vanderver; her parents, Audie and Nancy Robinson; brothers, Clifton, Audie Gene, Robert “Red,” John “JR” and Euclid; sisters, Irene, Frances and Martha; and her son-in-law, William T. “Tommy” Turner.

Survivors include her daughter, Lillie Mae Vanderver Turner; granddaughters, Deb Higgins (Phillip) and Tommie Lou Brasher (Mark); great-grandchildren, P.J. Higgins, Jeffrey Higgins (Deanna), Heather McSpadden Blackmon (Derek), Samantha McSpadden and Jared McSpadden; great-great-grandchildren, Cinnamon Higgins, Seth and Eli Burtram and Savannah Higgins; great-great-great-granddaughter, Ella Mae Blackmon; sister, Eunice Schultz (Bill); brother, Paul Robinson (Laura); brother-in-law, Louie Schultz; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
