Making the State Softball Tournament has become a rite of passage for the Sumiton Christian Eagles.

The Eagles have been a fixture at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park for the past five years.

This year’s path to Montgomery starts today in the Class 1A, Area 10 Tournament at Sumiton Christian High School.

Softball teams across the state play in area tournaments this week with the top two teams from each area advancing to regional tournaments.

All area tournaments are double elimination.

Area 10  includes two of the top three teams in the state as well as defending state champion Parrish.

Last year, both Parrish and Sumiton Christian came out of the area with the Eagles winning the area tournament title. Parrish won the regional tournament and kept its hot streak going to Montgomery, knocking off Kinston for the Class 1A title.

No. 1 Sumiton Christian and No. 3 Lynn have split games this season with each team winning on the road. The Eagles and Bears have combined to win 81 games this season.

The Eagles won the right to host the tournament thanks to a tie-breaker.

Both teams won tournaments over the weekend.

The Eagles (40-13-1) won the Cullman Pre-State Blowout, defeating Hayden, the No. 1 team in Class 5, in the championship.

Lynn (41-5) won the North Alabama Conference Tournament, beating No. 8 South Lamar in the championship game.

Today’s area tournament starts at 12:30 with (4) Parrish playing (5) Brilliant. At 2 p.m., (2) Lynn takes on (3) Marion County. (1) Sumiton Christian plays the Parrish-Brilliant winner at 3:30 p.m. The winner’s bracket final is set for 5 p.m.

The two-day tournament starts at noon on Thursday with a loser’s bracket game. The area tournament championship game is set for 4:30 p.m.

Lynn is just one win away from matching its school record for wins in a season.

Four Walker County softball teams are ranked in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, but the Eagles are the only school in Walker County that will host an area tournament.

Curry, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, will begin play in the Class 5A, Area 12 Tournament at top-ranked Hayden on Thursday. (2) Curry takes on (3) Mortimer Jordan at 1 p.m. in the day’s first game. (4) Walker takes on (1) Hayden at 2:45 p.m.

The tournament will conclude on Friday.

Cordova, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, plays in the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament at No. 3 Winfield on Thursday. (2) Cordova, coming off a tournament victory at Northside over the weekend, takes on (3) Hamilton at 10:30 a.m.

Oakman, ranked No. 9 in Class 2A, will play in the 2A, Area 11 Tournament at Lamar County starting today. (2) Oakman faces (3) Cold Springs at 3 p.m.

Carbon Hill, Corner and Dora will play in the Class 4A, Area 8 Tournament at Oak Grove today.

(4)  Dora faces (1) Oak Grove at noon while (2) Carbon Hill takes on (3) Corner at 1:30. The losers will play an elimination game at 3 p.m. and the winner’s bracket final is set for 4:30. The tournament concludes either Friday or Saturday, depending on what teams are still alive. Dora’s prom is Friday.

At Decatur Heritage, both Addison and Meek play in the Class 1A, Area 15 Tournament today.

(4)  Meek plays (5) St. Bernard at 5 p.m. and (2) Addison takes on (3) Falkville, also at 5 p.m. The tournament concludes on Thursday.
