Final preparations are being made this week for Friday’s annual Relay for Life fundraising event at the walking track at Walker High School.

From 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, teams will gather to try to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

As of last Saturday, 32 teams had registered to participate in this year’s Relay, said Becky Rigsby, one of the event’s organizers.

“We’ve probably got several who haven’t registered yet,” Rigsby said.

Typically, almost 50 teams participate each year, she said.

“A lot of them procrastinate and don’t get registered until the last minute, and that’s OK,” she said.

The event will kick off with a survivor’s lap, followed by laps dedicated to caregivers and to the teams participating.

“We’re also going to be doing some fun laps, like crazy hat lap and maybe an ugly shirt lap. Just a lot of fun stuff,” Rigsby said.

Most teams that participate will set up tents surrounding the walking track and grill or prepare foods for those attending. There are also plenty of activities planned this year, including games for teams and individuals to play.

Even though the event is scheduled for 12 hours, many teams will pack up around midnight and begin to leave. Rigsby said this year, she’s encouraging teams to stay the full 12 hours.

“We do that because cancer doesn’t sleep,” she said. “We are encouraging teams to stay all night because we’ve got activities planned all night long.”

While most teams have already collected the money they will raise, there will be some on-site fundraising, Rigsby said.

“We want to let everyone know that so people can come prepared with cash in their pocket,” she said.

In the event of rain, all events will be moved inside at the Walker High practice gym at the walking track.

On Thursday, a survivors dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Bevill State’s Jasper campus.

The dinner is free for a survivor and a guest and will be catered by Jim ‘N Nick’s. The guest speaker for the dinner is Jeanne Cannon, who is also a cancer survivor.
