City council OKs requests for annexation

SUMITON — The Sumiton City Council approved ordinances for the annexation of several properties along Hall Burton Road at the edge of the city. The landowners had appeared at two previous council meetings to ask the council to approve the petitions and introduce the ordinances.

They also accepted a petition to annex another piece of property at the edge of Hall Burton Road and Rouse Road. That ordinance will be introduced at the next council meeting.

In other business:

•The council introduced an ordinance to rezone a property at 173 Rouse Road from agricultural A-1 to business B-2. They will vote on the matter at the next meeting.

•The council approved a notice to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management regarding compliance of the sewer improvements the city recently completed along Main Street and Hull Road.

•The Sumiton-area Veterans Board will honor local veterans on Memorial Day by placing a wreath on the Sumiton Veteran’s Monument, outside the Sumiton Community Center. The ceremony will take place on Monday at 10 a.m.

James Snow will be the honored speaker for the event.
