In February of this year, Bevill and AARP entered into the Back to Work 50+ initiative to help older individuals who are looking to re-enter the job market.
Chris Franklin, director of public relations at BSCC, said the program is part of a grant through the AARP Foundation, and the information session will work similar to a coaching program where it can help people with their personal marketing tools, networking strategies and job search skills when looking for jobs. The program is also funded in part by Walmart Foundation.
“It’s really a way to help them find some resources as they look for employment,” Franklin said. “... We have retirees that are leaving the workforce, but we also have some people who are facing early retirement. So, they are looking also to come back into the workforce after just leaving it. In addition to that, we have some people who are over 50 who are underserved in their jobs right now, and they’re looking to advance. Being at that age, it’s not always easy to find a different career path.”
The session will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Harold Wade Math and Science Building on the BSCC Jasper campus. It will provide information on the program, which will in turn “improve their search for in-demand jobs, job leads and in finding resources and training that helps them stay focused while they look for full-time employment,” according to a BSCC press release.
Franklin said scholarships will also be made available for two short-term, certified programs. Training for these programs can be completed in eight weeks or less, according to an article on Bevill’s website. However, information on understanding other career opportunities and what individuals can do to improve their research on seeking jobs will also be discussed at the session.
“We’re actually offering scholarships with a special focus on women,” Franklin said. “The programs we will be offering scholarships with are truck driving and certified nursing assistants. Those are two certificate programs [offered] at the college.”
Those interested in attending the information session on Thursday may call (855) 850-2525 toll free to register. Those who register will receive a “7 Smart Strategies for 50+ Jobseekers Guide,” which is a free job search guide. Also, individuals attending may bring their resumes to receive feedback from coaches.
