SUMITON — The Sumiton Christian Eagles made significant strides from the 2013 to 2014 seasons and Jenna Ergle was a valuable part of the progress.

Ergle put together an all-around season for a Sumiton Christian team that was ranked No. 1 for the entire season before finishing third at the State Softball Tournament.

The freshman slugger set a state record in RBIs, shattering the previous mark. She not only became the first player in state history to drove in more than 100 runs, she drove in 127, beating the old record by 28.

Ergle made the most of her 178 plate appearances. She hit .534, scoring 76 runs on 95 hits, with 127 RBIs, 23 doubles, four triples, nine stolen bases and 21 walks while hitting a staggering 24 home runs — tied for fourth most in state history.  She also broke the school’s home run record of 19 set by Cadi Oliver in 2012.

In the circle, Ergle pitched in 33 games and 200 innings, giving up just 156 hits, 100 runs (47 earned runs), 63 walks and struck out 156 batters.

She recorded eight shutouts, two no hitters and finished the year with a 23-10 record with a 1.64 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.

Ergle is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Player of the Year.

Her performances at the plate and in the circle earned her the Alabama Sports Writer Association’s awards for Class 1A Hitter and Player of the Year, as well as a spot on the All-State first team as a pitcher.

As a member of a squad that contained first-team All-State teammates Kendall Beth Sides, Katlyn Sides and Kendell Hamm, Ergle proved to be a vital component to the Eagles success throughout the year with clutch plays on offense and defense as Sumiton Christian improved their record from 30-29 in 2013 to 48-14-1 in 2014.

Sumiton Christian beat high-profile opponents in each classification throughout the state, capturing area and North-Central Regional titles and propelling the program to its sixth consecutive trip to the AHSAA State Softball Tournament appearance.

Eagles coach Jessica Aderholt, who has mentored Ergle for the past two seasons, said her ability to make clutch plays, regardless of her position on the field provides a tremendous boost to the overall abilities of the team.

“Jenna is just one of those players that’s going to make something happen,” Aderholt said. “That always helps, because when someone makes something happen, it often begins an effect of positive momentum. She’s also a very hard out — every time she comes to the plate, I feel that people often get nervous about it because of her ability to hit the ball.”
