The first — Inspire Piloxing and Club Fit — begins tonight at 6 p.m. at Gamble Park.
The six-week fitness series is an extension of the “Move More, Live Better” event sponsored by HAP at Memorial Park on May 3.
Instructors from five fitness centers in the area have volunteered to lead piloxing, cardio kickboxing, Zumba, yoga and a boot camp workout.
Organizer Sharon Hogg said she hopes the classes will attract people who want to establish a new exercise routine but are hesitant to visit gyms.
“People who have never been to a gym are intimidated when they walk through the door because they don’t know what to expect on the other side. So this is a way to show them not only the different fitness centers that are out there but different instructors, what each instructor offers and how they teach because every instructor is different,” Hogg said.
The classes will be appropriate for beginners as well as advanced students.
To combat the summer heat, participants are encouraged to bring a bottle of water and a workout towel.
Hogg said the schedule includes a variety of exercises so that local residents can experiment with workouts that don’t fit their normal routine.
Hogg tells her students that while walking is beneficial for overall health, more muscle groups are activated during an hour of Zumba or kickboxing.
The goal is to get people to not only move more but to also move differently.
“There is something for everybody. You just have to find it. This is a way to say, ‘Look what your options are,’ because we have a lot right here in Walker County,” she said.
HAP is a collaboration of the Walker Area Community Foundation, Walker Baptist Medical Center, the University of Alabama and United Way of Central Alabama. It was formed in response to the county’s current ranking as 66 out of 67 in regards to health and well-being.
All of the summer fitness classes will be held at 6 p.m. at Gamble Park. The schedule is as follows:
July 1 — Inspire Piloxing and Club Fit
July 8 — Target Cardio Kick
July 15 — Solid Image Zumba
July 22 — Boot Camp with April
July 29 — Yoga with Deb
August 5 — Fitness Factory Zumba.
