Funeral services will be today, July 8, 2014, at 6 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home with burial at Walker Memory Gardens. The Rev. Chris Lindsey and Dr. Willis Harbison will officiate. Visitation will be today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Shurbitt was a builder by trade. As construction superintendent, he built commercial buildings all over the Southeast. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying his own plane to many jobsites, which earned him the nickname “Sky King” or “Sky.” He was proud of the fact that he always completed his projects on time and under budget.
He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rites Lodge for over 50 years. He was a member of Grace Chapel Nazarene Church. He was also proud of his Indian heritage and gave all his children and grandchildren Comanche names.
Shurbitt was the fourth child born to Jess and Missouri Shurbitt. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas David Shurbitt; his parents; and three sisters: Margaret Stewart, Mary Rose Smith and Annette Tackett.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Grace Shurbitt; daughter and son-in-law, Marchettia and Phillip Jones; five grandchildren, Stacie Lane Allred (Jake), Stephanie Jean Jones (Shaun), Mary Alex Grace (Brian), Thomas Jacob Shurbitt and Jesse Rae Shurbitt; one great-granddaughter, Mia Claire Grace; daughter-in-law, Jody Shurbitt; one sister, Jessie Virginia Rucker; brother and sister-in-law, David and Donnie Grace; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Grace Chapel Nazarene Church Building Fund at 1500 Hwy 124, Jasper, Alabama 35501 or RUFF Animal Rescue at PO Box 453, Oakman, Alabama 35579 in honor of his beloved pet Molly.
