Funeral services will take place Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at noon at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home with burial at Walker Memory Gardens. Robert Tackett and Richard Berger will officiate.
Chalmers’ grandparents emigrated to America from France through Ellis Island in New York. Laurent proudly displayed in his home the steamer trunk which they brought with them on their journey. His mother was the postmaster in Oakman.
He was born Nov. 29, 1927. He graduated from Oakman High School and studied at Florence State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama), where he was a member of the ROTC. He served in the United States Army as a commissioned officer and paratrooper. Chalmers spent his entire working career at Alabama Power Company, retiring in 1993 from his final position at the Miller Steam Plant. He was an active member, deacon and treasurer for many years at Goodsprings Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pierre and Nell Laurent.
Laurent is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Laurent; son, John Chalmers Laurent of Argo; grandsons, Gregory Chad Laurent and Benjamin Laurent; granddaughter, Mattie Laurent; great-granddaughter, Ralynn Laurent; and his sister, Peggy Nell Hanby of Birmingham.
