Beasley leads the way

Jasper's Brandon Beasley was the only golfer under par during the opening round of the 39th annual Pigeon Dove Junior Tournament at the Musgrove Country Club golf course on Monday.

The former Curry High School golfer shot a two-under par 69 and holds a three-stroke lead in the 16-18 division of the tournament.

Beasley, who recently signed to play golf at Wallace State-Hanceville, finished ninth in Class 5A at the state golf tournament held in Huntsville last month.

Michael Holt of Trussville is in second place after shooting a 72 in Monday's opening round. A pair of local golfers are within striking distance as well. Jasper's Weston Griffith, a Walker High School golfer, is in third place, five back of Beasley, while Cordova High School golfer Austin Sanders is in fourth, six strokes back after an opening-round 75.

Nick Davis of Springville is in fifth place at 77 followed by Colby Russell of Dora, who shot a 79. Hunter Fikes of Jasper, Josh Burton of Dora and Ruston Smith of Tuscaloosa are tied for seventh at 80.

Today's final threesome in the 16-18 division includes Beasley, Holt and Griffith and will tee off at 9:30 a.m. on the first hole. The group of Sanders, Davis and Russell will tee off at 9:20 a.m.

Twenty one golfers are competing in the 16-18 division and there are a total 63 golfers playing in five different divisions in the two-day tournament. Golfers in the 16-18, 14-15, 12-13 and girls divisions play 18 holes each day while the 11-and-under division golfers play nine holes each day.

In the 14-15 division, Tyler Hitchner of Tuscaloosa leads the way after an even par 71 on Monday. He is one stroke ahead of Clanton's Forrest Knight. Austin Pugh of Jasper, Spencer Fikes of Jasper and Spencer Pack of Brookwood are tied for third after shooting 76 on Monday.

Patrick Martin leads the 12-13 division by four strokes after an opening-round 75. William Walker of Tuscaloosa and Michael Brown of Birmingham are tied for second at 79. Ethan Hughes of Birmingham is in third at 80 followed by Sam Goldasich (82) of Birmingham and Anthony Wilkerson (83) of Birmingham.

Taylor Casebere of Birmingham holds an insurmountable lead in the girls division after firing a one-over par 72 on Monday. Jordan Clark is in second and Cassidy Hughes is third.

There is a two-way tie atop the 11-and-under division. Addison Nix of Auburn and Jack Goldasich of Birmingham each shot 40 on the back nine Monday. Jasper's Jackson Holladay and Birmingham's Ford Goldasich are tied in second at 48.
