Inaugural tourney planned for Jasper disc golf course
The inaugural event will be held on July 24 at North Jasper Park, which was recently equipped with an 18-hole disc golf course. Money raised from the event will support the Jasper First United Methodist Church Celebration Home.
The Celebration Home, sponsored by the church, is similar to a Habitat for Humanity house and is currently being built near Maddox Middle School in Jasper for a deserving family.
The deadline to pre-register is Sunday. Registration forms are available at First United Methodist Church in the main office and in the youth center behind the church.
Jennifer Smith, the city’s director of leisure activities, said anyone age 10 and older is encouraged to participate.
The cost for the individuals event for beginner, intermediate and advanced disc golf players is $12. The cost for the partners contest is $10 per player. Participants may compete in both events for $15.
Registration for the event will start at 9 am with the partners competition kicking off at 9:30 a.m. The partners match will begin at 10 a.m.
To get to the course, take U.S. Highway 78 north then turn right on Alabama Highway 195 traveling toward Double Springs. Then, take a left on Brakefield Dairy Road and go one mile before turning left on Coral Boulevard. The park will be on your left.
The new course, which had its grand opening on June 5, has gotten good reviews on a website that provides information about disc golf course.
At www. dgcoursereview, the average rating by reviewers was four out of five discs.
“Course was very clean, easy to navigate due to holes being so short and very close to each other,” said one course critic published on the website. “Great course for beginners to play without getting too frustrated.”
