A Jasper man is in the Walker County Jail facing first degree theft charges after being arrested Friday when deputies found him inside a truck that had been reported stolen.

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said his office received a call Thursday afternoon that a 2004 red Dodge pickup truck had been stolen from a home on Old Birmingham Highway. The owners of the truck also reported cash and a handgun were inside the truck.

Around 1:45 a.m. Friday morning, deputies Tim Brand, Jim Brown and Alfred Grace located the truck around the 200 block of Pine Drive in Jasper.

Inside the truck, deputies found Robby Daniel Turner, 36, of Jasper. Turner was arrested and charged with first degree theft. He is being held within the Walker County Jail with bond pending. Tirey said deputies also recovered some of the cash and the handgun.

Tirey said Turner appeared to be under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest. He said information later showed Turner had been abusing methamphetamine at the time of the robbery and the arrest.

"The three deputies that handled this case did an outstanding job," Tirey said.

"They found the vehicle quickly and we have a suspect charged with a felony crime. They worked hard to get this crime solved quickly."
