Local law enforcement officers are searching for a Double Springs man suspected in a local shooting death.

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said deputies responded on Tuesday to an emergency call on Edgil Road and found Thomas Lynn Smith, 56, shot twice. Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe pronounced Smith dead on the scene at 1 p.m.

Tirey said investigators with the Sheriff's Office have a suspect in the case, Michael Lynn Sherer of Double Springs. Sherer is Smith's nephew. Investigators are unsure of the reason for the shooting, but believe it involved theft or robbery, Tirey said.

Investigators believe Sherer fled the scene in Smith's car, a maroon 1989 Ford Econo-Line van with Winston County license plates. Tirey said officials with the Sheriff's Office believe Sherer left with the weapon and consider him to be armed and dangerous.

"We have contacted a large area around this county to see if we can't apprehend this suspect," Tirey said.

Sherer is wanted in Winston County for charges of credit card fraud and theft, Tirey said. However, Tirey said he plans to meet with representatives from the Walker County District Attorney's Office today to file formal charges of murder.

Smith's body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

Anyone with information about Sherer's whereabouts may call the Sheriff's Office at 205-384-7218 or the Winston County Sheriff's Office at 205-489-2115.
