Curry splits tri-match; Walker earns area win

CURRY — Curry’s volleyball team split a pair of three-set matches at home on Monday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets opened with a narrow win over Carbon Hill before following with a loss to Parkway Christian.

Against Carbon Hill, Chloe Bennett paced Curry with eight kills, Nikki Brooks had seven kills and three blocks, Mary Beth Scott and Bretta Lane each had five kills and Amber Graham added eight assists and three aces.

In the Parkway Christian match, Curry won the opening set before dropping consecutive sets to the Lady Wildcats, 25-18, 15-13.

Bennett led Curry with nine kills, Scott had seven kills, five digs and three aces, Payton Norris added 12 digs, Carlee Richardson added eight digs and Amber Graham contributed eight assists. Curry will play Walker at 4:30 p.m. today and will take on Winston County at 6:30 p.m.

Waker tops Mortimer Jordan in area match

Walker stayed unbeaten in area play with a straight-set win over Mortimer Jordan on Monday.

The Lady Vikings (9-11, 2-0) won the match 25-9, 25-12, 25-15.

Hannah Sparkman led Walker with six kills while both Amber Ivory and C.J. Trunnell had five kills and Polly Scruggs had 16 assists.

Walker will return to action today with a tri-match against Curry and Winston County.

The day will open with a Curry-Walker JV match. The Walker varsity team will then play Curry in an area match beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Vikings will close out the day with a match against Winston County tentatively set for 7 p.m.

Oakman sweeps

The Oakman Lady Wildcats needed just six sets to pick up a pair of area wins on Monday.

Oakman defeated Lamar County 25-20, 25-11, 25-23 and knocked off Sulligent 25-7, 25-13, 25-21.

In the opening match, Haley Davis had five kills, five digs and four aces for Oakman (12-10, 6-2). Hope Kilgore had nine digs and two aces, Sara Mason had five kills and three aces, Haley Earnest added four kills, six digs and two aces and Genie Chappell had nine digs.

Against Sulligent, Heather Fondren had six aces and five kills, Mason had six kills, four digs and four aces, Davis had five aces, four digs and a kill and Chappell had nine digs and five aces.

Oakman will host a tri-match vs. Cordova and Dora on Thursday. The Lady Wildcats will open against Dora at 4 p.m.

Cordova beats Sumiton Christian

Cordova earned a home, area win over Sumiton Christian on Monday, beating the Lady Eagles 25-14, 26-24, 25-12.

For the Lady Blue Devils, Kristy Smith led the way with 17 kills, Tiffany Colburn had 16 assists, Shayna Higginbotham added 11 assists and Melanie Porter had nine kills.

Cordova hosts Hamilton today and will play at Oakman in a tri-match on Thursday.

Walker JV tops Mortimer Jordan

The Walker JV team improved to 7-5 on the season with a 25-9, 24-21 home win over Mortimer Jordan on Monday.

For the Lady Vikings, Ashley Kamplain had 17 assists, Shanna Peppers added 10 kills and Bria Robinson had five kills.

Walker will play a home match vs. the Curry JV squad at 3:15 p.m. today.
