Smith was born in Arley on April 10, 1915 to the late James and Lela Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Civil Service as Motor Transport Officer, Ft. Bragg, N.C., after 32 years of service. He was a Master Mason and a lifetime Methodist. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christine M. Smith of Geneva; four daughters, Gerilyn Schmidt (William) of Spotsylvania, Va., Judy Fallin of Houston, Texas, Gail Bober (James) of North Olmsted, Ohio and Carol Cox (Bob) of Geneva; four sons, Dr. D. Ray Johnson (Susan) of Andersonville, Tenn., James Robert Johnson (Mary) of Yakima, Wash., Kevin Smith of Berea, Ohio and Bryan Smith (Amanda) of Luting, La.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Milburn “Ray” J. Smith (Anne) of Jasper; three sisters, Pauline Stoffel (George) of Birmingham, Stella Fritter of Richmond, Va. and Edyth Plunkett of Canton, Ga.
