Lt. Colonel Jeffrey Coleman, pictured second from left, visited Dora High School on Wednesday to share wisdom with students to prepare them for life after high school. Coleman is a 1984 graduate of Walker High School. The Daily Mountain Eagle has featured Coleman's writings recently about Black history in Walker County. Coleman encouraged Dora High students on Wednesday to work hard and plan ahead. "What do you want to do with your life? You've got to answer that question," he said. "...You guys are all on the same playing field with the same opportunities. You've just got to take advantage of it." Pictured, from left to right, is Dora High Principal Paige Abner, Coleman and his wife, Dr. Jocelyn (Mason) Coleman, and Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham. Schools in Walker County and around the country are observing Read Across America this week to encourage and celebrate reading. Memorial Park Elementary School librarian Melissa Dutton is leading a "Get Caught in Reading" initiative this week at the school. On Tuesday, she told a group of second-grade students, "Find what you love and read a lot of it." Students that read the most in classrooms this week will be rewarded for accepting the reading challenge. Dutton is pictured working with students who were given bookmarks to color and use in their books.
