Betty Sue (Smothers) Stephens, 87, passed away Saturday, May, 7, 2022, at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham.
She was the wife of James Stephens. They shared 64 years of marriage together.
Born in Glenn Allen, Betty Sue graduated from Carbon Hill High School in 1955. After moving to Pensascola, Florida, she met the love of her life, “Steve,” and they were married on September 3, 1958. As the wife of a career Navy sailor, she was a homemaker. She and Steve lived in several different states including Florida, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee and Hawaii. After raising their family in Ohio, they retired to Betty’s beloved Alabama.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness, love for her family and her famous southern cooking: biscuits, banana pudding, fried chicken, pies and Christmas cookies and candy.
Betty is survived by her loving husband, James Stephens, who she always called “Steve;” three children, Janeena (Mike) of Luray, Virginia, Angela (Ralph) Wright of Louisa, Kentucky, and Jim Stephens of Carbon Hill; grandchildren, Josh and Ethan Zalipski, Robert Stacy, Johnny Sullivan / Ryan, Anna and Jamie Stephens, and Alex Wright; two great-grandchildren, Johnny Sullivan and Olivia Stephens.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 12, 2022, at the Wilson Funeral Home in Carbon Hill. The family will welcome friends and family members to visit at 1 p.m. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., with internment immediately following at Kelley Cemetery. Pastor Dwight Bailey of Carbon Hill FWB Church will be officiating.
