Sarah Catherine Walker Murphy

Sarah Catherine Walker Murphy was born June 13, 1919, in Hempstead, New York, and died at her home in Jasper on January 19, 2022. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Leroy McCarlis Walker and Rebecca Frances Woodfin Walker (Teepsie); her husband, Sam Ross Murphy; and grandson, Lawson Woodfin Murphy Jr. 

She married Sam on April 5, 1941, and they had three children, Catherine Wood Murphy Payne (Louis), Sam Walker (Jane), and Lawson Woodfin (Linda). Her grandchildren knew her as “Kaki” and are Mary Wood Payne Beasley (David), Catherine Thomason Payne Haynes (Bruce), Marion Walker Payne (Denise), Elizabeth Woodfin Murphy Collins (Christopher), Sam Aycock Murphy, Mary Elizabeth Murphy Loomis (Brandon), and John Hinton Murphy (Abby). Great grandchildren include Mary Hunter Beasley Tomlinson (Tommy), Sarah Catherine Beasley, David Muldrow Beasley, Jr (Hannah), Samuel Ross Beasley, Walker Thomason Haynes, Lawson Edgerton Haynes, Caroline Woodfin Haynes, Mary Frances Beaman Collins, Kathleen Woodfin Collins, Sarah Helen Loomis, Elizabeth Parten Loomis, Anne Claire Loomis, Virginia Grace Loomis, Lawson Woodfin Murphy, III, and Margaret Louise Murphy. Great-great grandchildren are Rowan Beckwith Beasley and Lewis Carter Tomlinson. 

Sarah Catherine was a lifelong active member of First Christian Church. She graduated from Walker County High School and then attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Sarah Catherine was an advocate for young people in the community of Jasper and dedicated much of her time to the Murphy Shelter. She enjoyed time with friends, especially at Smith Lake. She was happiest spending time with her family. 

Kaki had many wonderful caregivers through the years, and we are forever grateful for each of them, Irene Brown, JoAnn Chatman, Cynthia Cherry, Cynthia Mitchell, Thelma Parker, Cathy Simon, Tammy Spears, Shontia Spears, and Lisa Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Christian Church, the Walker Area Community Foundation, the Walker College Foundation, or to the charity of your choice. 

The service will be at Oak Hill Cemetery Monday, January 24, 2022, at 11 a.m., with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Christopher Collins, Bruce Haynes, Brandon Loomis, John Murphy, Sam Aycock Murphy and Walker Payne.
